Overview

Suvarnadurg (meaning "Golden Fort") is a majestic island fortress located near Harnai in the Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra. Built on a small island in the Arabian Sea, it stands as a testament to the naval supremacy of the Maratha Empire.

Highlights

While the fort was originally built by the Adil Shahi dynasty in the 16th century, it was captured and significantly strengthened by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1660 to counter the growing influence of the Siddis and European colonial powers. The Naval Base: It served as a strategic naval base for the Maratha Navy. It gained immense fame under the leadership of the legendary Navy Chief Kanhoji Angre, who used the fort to protect the Konkan coastline from foreign invaders. The Twin Forts: Suvarnadurg is part of a defensive system that includes three land forts: Kanakdurg, Fatehdurg, and Goa Fort. These land forts were used to protect the main island fort and monitor the shoreline.
